The Illinois Department on Aging helps older people live independently in their own homes and communities. As the population ages, services and programs for older people must evolve as well because longevity means more when quality of life is enhanced. To best serve older adults, we must also serve their families and teach younger people about the realities of aging, so many of our programs have an intergenerational emphasis. Working with Area Agencies on Aging, community-based service providers and older people themselves, the Illinois Department on Aging strives to improve quality of life for current and future generations of older Illinoisans.

Governor Blagojevich Reminds Illinoisans to File for Federal Economic Stimulus Payments before October 15
Older adults who have not filed an income tax return for 2007 must file by October 15 in order to receive an economic stimulus check from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). For more information, read the governor's press release (PDF) and visit www.irs.gov.
People with disabilities ride free
Governor Blagojevich has recently signed Senate Bill 1920 into law allowing qualifying disabled individuals who are aged 16 or older and meet Circuit Breaker income eligibility requirements free rides on all fixed route public transportation throughout the state of Illinois. In order to determine eligibility, you must complete a 2007 IL-1363 application and mail it in to the Department on Aging or apply online at www.cbrx.il.gov. For assistance with filing on-line, please go to your nearest senior center, Senior Health Assistance Program (SHAP) office or Senior Health Insurance Program (SHIP) volunteer.
If you’ve already completed a 2007 IL-1363 for benefits of the Circuit Breaker program and are a qualifying disabled person, you will be receiving a postcard in the mail to take to your transit authority to receive your free rides. For more details, contact your local mass transit authority (see www.illinois.gov/transit for the listing) and read the Governor's press release.
Be Ready for the Digital TV Transition
On February 17, 2009, all full-power broadcast television stations in the U.S. will stop broadcasting on analog airwaves and begin broadcasting only in digital. A digital-to-analog converter box will allow you to continue using your existing analog TV to watch over-the-air digital broadcast. For more information, visit the DTV.gov Web site.
Emergency Home Response Service Certification
The Illinois Department on Aging is soliciting applications for certification in the provision of Emergency Home Response Service (EHRS), a 24-hour emergency communication link to assistance outside the client’s home for clients based on health and safety needs and mobility limitations. For more information, visit the Procurement Opportunities page.
