March 29, 2002 "Pioneering Approaches to Long Term Care" Workshops Offered SPRINGFIELD, IL Illinois Department on Aging Director Margo E. Schreiber invites nursing home administrators, social workers, registered nurses and other interested professionals to attend an April or May workshop focusing on the national movement to reform nursing home care. "Workshops we have held on the ‘Pioneer’ movement within the world of long term care have been met with great enthusiasm," Schreiber said. "It’s important to the Department to keep professionals, volunteers and family members abreast of this new and exciting home-like approach to institutional care that may make a world of difference for all of us in years to come." Titled "Pioneering Approaches to Long Term Care: Implementing Strategies and Practices," the workshop will feature a presentation by Jennifer Gettman, Nursing Home Administrator from National Health Care in Maryland Heights, Missouri. Gettman will discuss what has worked in her 220bed Registered Eden Alternative facility. Gettman belongs to a new movement that is transforming the culture of how residents and staff live and work together, an approach that is gaining momentum with providers, physicians and other health care professionals across the nation. The workshop will be repeated in six locations:
The workshop is sponsored by the Illinois Department of Public Health and the Illinois Department on Aging Long Term Care Ombudsman Program. Six continuing education hours are available for Illinoislicensed nursing home administrators and social workers. ###
