May 20, 2002 Intergenerational Week Links Seniors and Youth SPRINGFIELD, IL Illinois Department on Aging Director Margo E. Schreiber encourages Illinoisans of all ages to help celebrate Intergenerational Week, May 19-25, 2002, by learning more about volunteer opportunities throughout the state linking seniors and youth. "Intergenerational activities are important to the development of children and the quality of life of seniors," Schreiber said. "The majority of seniors in Illinois are extremely active and eager to participate in activities with young people and to serve as mentors or tutors." Schreiber extended thanks to the nearly 5,500 senior volunteers throughout the state who give of their time to youth in a host of activities ranging from mentoring and tutoring to teaching crafts and skills. "If more seniors are interested in giving a little attention and time to young people, they should call the Illinois Department on Aging’s Senior HelpLine to learn about intergenerational programs available in their area," Schreiber said. "These activities are enjoyable for both the seniors and the children, and it’s wonderful to see these generations connect in such a positive way. Intergenerational activities give children confidence and they’re able to improve academically, socially and emotionally." Schreiber said the Illinois Department on Aging has been working with the Illinois Association of Park Districts and local park districts to highlight Intergenerational Week. Members of the Northbrook Park District Senior Center, for example, will enjoy a special presentation of "The Music Man" by students at Winkelman School, and the Lincolnwood Senior’s Club has activities planned with children enrolled in Lincolnwood Park District summer camps. The Peoria Park District Foster Grandparent Program will plant flowers in Trewyn Park together with the Foster Grandparent volunteers and local school children. In Schaumburg, a chess tournament, as well as a pool tournament, will be held at the Community Recreation Center linking players of all ages.
