W1: Compulsive Hoarding: Understanding, Assessing and Intervening
  • Christiana Bratiotis, Boston University School of Social Work, Boston, Massachusetts

    Christiana Bratiotis, Ph.D. candidate at Boston University in Sociology and Social Work will present this session on compulsive hoarding including mental health diagnostic criteria, demographics, prevalence, behavioral, emotional and belief / meaning of the problem. Also discussed will be strategies for intervening and successful community models.

    Representatives from the Senior Health Insurance Program (SHIP) will discuss plan benefit year 2009 including plan changes, enrollment options and the latest guidance from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

W4: Evidence-Based Health Promotion Programming: Illinois Journey from Research to Practice

    This session will feature an overview of evidence-based health promotion programs and presentations on those currently disseminated in Illinois: Strong for Life, Fit & Strong, the Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program and the Chronic Disease Self-Management Program. The afternoon will include breakout sessions with local experts from around the state on evidence-based health promotion program essentials, such as securing funding, program sustainability, cultural adaptations, marketing, recruitment, best practices, and how to incorporate evidence-based programs into standard health promotion/disease prevention initiatives within the aging network.

W5: The Accurate Diagnosis and Treatment of Dementia in the Outpatient Setting

    The Aging Tsunami is coming and, with it, the number of people who appear to have dementia. Plan on attending this session, led by Dr. Roger Weise, a leader in the medical field in the care of older adults, and learn the signs/symptoms of dementia in comparison to other diseases/conditions; understand the differential diagnosis of dementia; and learn about the medical and non-medical management of the symptoms of dementia within an outpatient setting.
